Thyra's Story
I was born and raised on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, where I was endlessly surrounded by towering mountains, crisp ocean air and a whole lot of rain! I moved to South Western Ontario in 2007, and have been in the general area ever since. While I miss the landscape and people in BC, I have made my home here in the KW Region.
I navigate the world with a physical disability called Spina Bifida. Not only does my disability influence who I am as a person (I am an excellent dancer, for example), but it has also afforded me a unique perspective of the world - a perspective that I use every day in my work with clients.
While my experiences throughout my life have contributed to the work that I do as a clinician, I have developed the bulk of my knowledge, skills, and therapeutic style here in Ontario. I first attended the University of Waterloo, completing a Joint Honours undergraduate degree in Psychology and Sexuality, Marriage and Family Studies. Following this I completed a 2-year Master of Science in Couple and Family Therapy at the University of Guelph.
I have over 550 hours of direct clinical experience supporting clients from diverse backgrounds, with a vast array of experiences and needs.
It is an honest privilege for me to walk alongside clients during some of the most challenging moments in their lives. I hold this privilege with great care and responsibility.
I recognize that for so many people, the world in which we live is unsafe and unjust. I work from anti-oppressive and feminist-informed social justice frameworks, which means that when we work together, I will look to see you, I will listen to hear you, I will advocate with and for you, and I will recognize that you are a part of a social system that does not always make space for you to achieve the things that you hope for, or that you deserve. Amidst all of this, I will work with you to empower yourself, to find joy, and create meaning.
